We’ll be updating the guide with new suggestions every month, so be sure to remember this page and check back later.

January 2025

Hrana & pijača: Kraljevi Mignon pastry shop

Whoever says January is not the right time to be enjoying some sweets is lying. Especially if you have the chance to visit Kraljevi Mignon, or the “House of Delicious Cakes”, as the patisserie is known to the locals.

The cakes and other confectionery that come from the hands of Nataša Mohar Mustafa, her husband Zaid and the team are royal, as this is the meaning of “kraljevi”, that is of high quality, fresh, natural and made to order for special occasions or just because.

At this patisserie, they are happy to accommodate requests and so they make excellent cakes for those who, for one reason or another, cannot or do not want to eat certain ingredients.

In addition to the cakes made to order, you can try a wide selection of pastries and a warm cup of tea, coffee or a drink of your choice. We definitely recommend the original Arabic baklava!

Shopping: Yoga in Everyday Life Association & Prana joga center

The Yoga in Everyday Life Association and Prana Yoga Centre offer a chance to start building your strength, balance and flexibility through yoga.

The former is located in Maister Square and has been organising yoga classes for more than 30 years. In their premises they offer exercise at 8 levels and programmes such as yoga for a healthy spine, yoga for stress relief, yoga for mature years and free sessions in the park during the summer months.

At the Prana Yoga Centre, you will learn about the Iyengar method of yoga, which emphasises precise body alignment and requires longer postures than other styles of yoga.

This method is characterised by a sequence of postures that develop strength, flexibility, endurance, concentration and body alignment.

Tip for a trip: Krvavec ski resort

While Kranj is attractive for locals and visitors due to its wide range of cultural and social activities, the Krvavec ski resort, 20 minutes away, is inviting for all skiers, snowboarders and lovers of other winter activities.

The ski resort, which has been awarded the title of “Best Ski Resort in Slovenia” for the 9th year in a row, has 30 kilometres of well-maintained ski slopes stretching between 1450 and 1971 metres above sea level.

In addition to skiing and snowboarding on the slopes, visitors can also enjoy ski touring, ski jumps in the Snow Park or night sledding.

Event: Saturday matinees at the Prešeren Theatre

Every Saturday at 10am, the Prešeren Theatre and the Federation of Creative Associations organise Saturday matinees for the youngest audience members. Don’t miss the following ones in January:

The Girl and the Elephant (Bufeto Institute), 4 January: Based on the short story The Elephant by the Russian classic writer Alexander Kuprin, this production is filled with love for children and care for what they dream of. This is the story of a girl who overcomes her numbness and fears with the help of her imagination and those closest to her.

How to give a Hedgehog a Hug (Miss Basilica), 11 January: This show invites us into the workshop of Miss Basilica, which is always a source of miraculous stories, but we have never had the chance to peek inside. This time we are allowed to. And a world opens up before us, where recycled objects and materials are used to create puppets right before our eyes, which then they come to life and invite us into their world. Basilica’s workshop is a place of unlimited imagination. From discarded objects and workshop tools, the world of the hedgehog’s story emerges. The workshop becomes a forest, the tools and objects turn into an elephant, a bear, a tortoise, a magpie, a jay bird and a hedgehog.

The Wise Chick (Lighthouse Children’s Theatre), 18 January: The story of a hen who is so unlucky to hatch a clever chick. The incident upsets the whole henhouse, as it has never happened before that a chick knows more than a hen. The chick is unlike anyone else, and since it also makes strange noises, the cockerel demands that it be got rid of. Everyone agrees, except the hen who is willing to suffer just so that the chick will have a mother. But then an owl appears, looking for its chick. Of course she recognises it in the wise chick.

Cecilia and the Dragon (Maša Jazbec and Andrej Fon), 25 January: Have you ever met a real dragon, or do you fantasise about how to lure one with all sorts of tricks? Cecilia doesn’t hesitate and sets off on an adventure as a fearless knight, where she confronts and tricks a dragon. In its musical and playful form, the show playfully explores the theme of the roles of women and men in contemporary society and breaks down stereotypical divisions between male and female roles in a direct, engaging way. Instead of male knights we have female knights, bloodthirsty dragons become blunt-headed lizards and former helpless victims are now adventurous girls who try to meet dragons by any means necessary.

Not to be missed: Charity campaign “In Kranj we think well in our hearts”

Until 22 January, you can participate, to the best of your ability, in the humanitarian project “In Kranj we think well in our hearts”. The project is now in its 6th year and aims to bring the local community together to help families and individuals who are facing difficult life situations.
